Pijama bag/ Guarda pijama
Today's a slow day at Casa California so I decided to sew a pajama bag for my niece, Oli, to give her for Xmas. I found a vintage pattern that you can see here and here. I recycled all the materials: left over fabric, a ripped pillow cover, remnants of ribbon and some stuffing.
The cat itself only needs two pieces of 20 x 20in fabric. For the details, scrap pieces should be fine, or one piece about 15x15in. You could also embroider them by hand or even paint them on.
This is easy to make and took me about 5-6 hours.
Hoy Casa California estuvo vacía, así que decidí coser un guarda pijama para Oli, mi sobrina, como regalo navideño. El patrón original se encuentra aquí y aquí. Usé sólo materiales reciclados: restos de tela de cojín, una funda de cojín rota, un poco de cinta de raso y relleno.
El gato sólo usa dos pedazos de tela de 46 x 46cm. Para los detalles, retazos pequeños de tela o un pedazo de unos 38 x 38cm. También se podría bordar o incluso pintar a mano.
Este es un proyecto fácil de hacer. Yo me demoré unas 5 a 6 horas.
El patrón lo dibujé a mano alzada, pero básicamente mide 46cm de arriba a abajo, 33cm de ancho en la parte más ancha, y 7cm de ancho en el cuello. No saqué fotos de los pasos para dibujarlo. Déjenme un comentario si les parece necesario agregarlo.
The back of the body is divided into two halves that overlap, I'm stressing this because it means that each half will measure an inch more than half of the front, which you can use to trace the shape. This extra inch is important because it gives you enough fabric for the overlap that'll allow whatever you put inside the bag to stay put. (In the next two pictures you can compare the widths at the neck.)
For the legs, I used contrasting fabric and sewed it to the body.
La parte de atrás del cuerpo se divide en dos mitades que se superponen. Pongo énfasis en esto porque cada mitad mide casi 3cm más que la mitad de la parte delantera, que se puede usar para trazar las partes traseras. Estos cms extra son importantes porque permiten sobreponerlos para que las cosas que se metan al guarda pijama no se caigan. Para las patas, usé una tela contrastante y la fijé al cuerpo con una costura simple.
I used ribbon (folded onto to itself to narrow it) to make the paws stand out. You could also do this with paint, markers o a tight zigzag stitch.
Usé una cinta de raso (doblada a lo largo para hacerla más angosta) para hacer resaltar cada pata. Funcionaría también hacerlo con pintura, plumones, o una puntada zigzag tupida.
I hid the fray with a zigzag stitch.
Tapé el deshilachado con una puntada zigzag.
For the back pieces: use the ribbon or bias tape or turn the fabric in and sew to protect it from fraying. If you use ribbon or bias tape, make sure you have about an inch to spare at the top and bottom, so it doesn't cause problems when you close the body. (This was a mistake I made; the bottom of the green ribbon was too short and I had to sew the fabric further up, making the paws smaller. I pretended I didn't notice.)
Para las partes traseras: se puede usar cinta de raso, cinta al bies o una basta simple para que no se deshilachen. Si usas cinta, asegúrate de que tenga unos 2cms extra hacia arriba y abajo, para que no tengas problemas al cerrar el cuerpo. (Yo no lo hice y fue un error: me obligó a volver a hacer una segunda costura para reforzar la parte inferior y al hacerlo achiqué las patas. Decidí ignorarlo.)
I added a tail on one of the pieces of the back.
Agregué la cola a una de las mitades de la espalda.
To put the body together: face the right sides and pin and sew all around. Below you can see how the backs overlap. Reinforce the border so it doesn't open. Then, turn inside out.
Para terminar el cuerpo, pon los derechos de la tela hacia adentro y fija con alfileres para coser en todo al rededor. En la foto se ve cómo se superponen las partes traseras. Reforzar el borde para que no se abra. Luego, dalo vuelta.
For the face, I made a cross 10 x 4in to draw an oval. The oval will be used horizontally.
Para la cara, hice una cruz de 10 x 25cm para dibujar un óvalo. El óvalo será usado horizontalmente.
I drew the face and then sewed it with a small zigzag stitch. For the nose, I took a piece of pink cotton napkins that used to belong to my grandma.

The ears measure 3.5 x 3.5in. As you can see in the picture, some of the ear will be inside the head, so don't cut the bottoms. This ensures that it stays firm.
Las orejas miden 9 x 9cm. Como se ve en la foto, la base de la oreja va adentro de la cabeza, así que no las cortes. Esta tela extra le da firmeza a las orejas.
To sew the head, make sure the ears are exactly where you want them. This next step is awkward: the ears need to be put face down towards the center of the head, so that they are on the outside when you turn the head right side out. Place the back of the head on top and pin, except at the base, where you want to leave a 2.5in opening to stuff the head. Then, turn and stuff lightly.
Para coser la cabeza, primero hay que fijar las orejas en el lugar exacto. El siguiente paso es un poco raro: las orejas deben ponerse boca abajo y hacia el centro de la cabeza para que queden por fuera cuando se da vuelta la cabeza para rellenarla. Fija la parte de atrás de la cabeza y cose todo alrededor, a excepción de una abertura de 7cm para rellenar la cabeza. Luego, dala vuelta y rellénala un poco.
To finish: insert the neck of the body into the head. The open portion will naturally fold inwards. Sew it down once or twice to prevent fraying. I added a piece of lace to give her an air of Aristocats.

Once I finished, I decided to add a piece of fabric to make a loop for hanging. It's not necessary but it could be useful. If you want to add it, do it when you're closing the head.
